Indians Way Of Life

October 12, 1492

These people here, they don’t carry or know anything of arms. I showed them swords and they took them by the blade and cut themselves through ignorance.  They have no iron, their darts being wands without iron, some of them had fish teeth at the end and others had various ends.

I think they should be good servants, and intelligent, for I observed that they quickly took in what I said to them.  They will be easily made Christians, as it appeared to me that they had no Religion.

Newcomers

My father and his men have discovered new people on the island, they are know to be white and very friendly from what I’ve heard. I mean I still find it a little weird that people are here but at the same time its really neat.

I love meeting new people and learning about how they live. One thing that I would like to learn about would be the ships that they arrived in. They are so different from ours, I always thought that we had really big boats, but theirs are like ships.

My father also said that we are going to celebrate new life on this island by having a feast tomorrow. I hope that goes well, I wonder if it’s going to be awkward at all . I hope not, I really love other peoples company and I am going to enjoy even more the company of newcomers.

New Ships, New People

Hello Everyone,

I was down by the beaches today, picking flowers and minding my own business when suddenly I heard talking. Well, actually it was more like yelling. I went down to the beach, thinking it was people living in the village, but when I got there, there were 3 HUGE ships sailing down the harbour. I ran back and hid in the bushes and forests and just sat there watching in awe. Eventually the people started coming off of the ships, so I went to talk to Doli.

The people ended up finding there way to Doli’s house and her Dad called a big feast in the court yard, he asked me to ask Christopher Columbus and his men to come. The new people are very nice; they gave us gifts of red caps and beads to put around our necks. We treasure the value of their friendship here. I hope they will really like our way of life and religion, especially our religion. I also hope that they stay for a while.

Doli is coming over to help me get ready for the feast tonight. Christopher Columbus said that he would also like to come over and see what we do before heading over to the feast. I think tonight is going to be a special night full of good memories, especially if the weather stays the way it is. Oh…there’s the door. I’ll write ASAP.

Giving In return

October.11, 1492

Later That Day…

After we gave the Indians presents they gave things in return. They afterward came to the ships. They gave us parrots, cotton threads and skeins, darts and many other things.    We then exchanged again for glass beads and small bells.

I have now taken possession of this new land, in the name of the Spanish Throne.  The Indians have this Island named Gunahani Island. I’ve landed on a small village of Moga.

I have renamed this Island as San Salvador, meaning Holy Saviour.

Land!

October.11, 1492

It’s only 2 hours after midnight.  We sighted land of about 2 miles away. At dawn our convoy sialed to the island and went ashore with the banner of Spain.  Having landing we saw trees very green, and very much water and fruits and divers of kinds.  Presently after arriving we saw naked people.  It appeared to be a race of people very poor in everything. The go entirely naked. So do the women.  They were all very well made with handsome bodies. Their hair is coarse and short. They wear their hair down to their eyebrows, except a few blocks behind, which they wear long and never, cut.  They are the colour of the Canarian’s, neither black nor white. They paint themselves. Colours of black, red, some white, and other colours they might find.  Some of they only paint their faces; some paint their whole body, some, only around the eyes, some only on the nose.

This Island is beautiful. The trees are very green. There is very much water and fruits and divers of all kinds. We gave the Indians red caps and glass bead to put around their necks, and other things of little value. This gave them great pleasure.

On The Ship

October.10, 1492

It’s about a month and a bit over than that into our voyage.  It’s later in the evening and getting darker out. I’m sure we’ll be sighting land soon.  All the men are tired and do not want to be here. I can tell I am the only one very enthusiastic about all of this. I have not seen the other 60 men on the two other ships, but I’m sure they are getting very tired of sailing.

Well hopefully we will sight land soon.

I Told

My father knows, he knows what I did, he knows what I saw and he is very worried. I didn’t want to make him worry but I knew I had to tell him before he became chief. It seems that he is disappointed in me but I understand what I did was wrong, so for me and Jaci’s punishment we have to clean out our huts and clean the vegetables that come out of the garden.

I don’t think Jaci is very happy with me but I’m sure that she will help me with the punishment. When I told my dad what we did he said that he would go and check to see if the ships were still there, if they are we are going to move north of the island just to me safe. I wonder if they are still there, if they are what’s going to happen?

So Many Good Things at Once

Fishing was wonderful, we caught many fish for the village and that is what we are going to have for dinner tonight. The types of fish that we eat are Schoolmasters, they are the most common fish near this island and we catch many.

Yesterday I also helped my mother with the garden, while we were working on it the only thing I could think about was a baby brother or sister, my mother wants to have a girl and my father wants to have a boy. I hope they don’t argue about it later on but I know whatever happens it will be loved much.

Later on we are going to prepare for my fathers ceremony, I am also very happy about him becoming chief. So many good things are happening at once its very good.

P.S.- Thinking about the boats at night, I still can’t get to sleep.

Setting Sail

September.1, 1492

The Crew is setting sail to India today. Eight years ago, in 1484, I asked King Joao II   of Portugal to Sponsor a voyage to Asia. My plan was rejected then. But I then decided I had different ideas on the world. A lot of the people in the world today believe the world is flat. I believe it is round. Four years after the king rejected me I returned and asked the same question.   I was rejected a second time, but you can’t give up that easily.  In 1490 my plan for a voyage to India was finally approved of and in the two years leading up to now I have spent my time getting prepared for this. I was appointed admiral of the sea. I am also to rule and govern whatever territory I might discover.

For this voyage we are going on today I was granted three ships. I am the commander of the Santa Maria while the commander of the Pinta is Martin Alonzo Pinzon and the commander of the Nina is Vincente Yanez Pinzon. The crew totals ninety men. There is thirty men on each ship.

Good News!

I’m about to go fishing with Jaci and I’m trying to get my hooks ready, I kind of like fishing but its not one of my favorite things to do.

I’m still thinking about telling my dad about what I’ve done, but I think I may tell me mother first. She seems to understand what’s really going on. I think all mother’s are like that.

A really good thing about my mother right now is that she found out that’s she is pregnant. I’m very happy for her and I hope it turns out to be a baby girl. I’ve always wanted a little sister to talk to but if it’s a boy I’ll still talk to him…I guess. I must go, I’ll write as soon as I can. Bye.
